Very interesting and kinda what I suspected all along. When I moved to the US in 1998, there were a lot more overweight/obese people here than I have ever seen in Germany where I grew up. And it's not getting any better. The grocery stores are loaded with cheap crappy fast-to-fix foods. Sure, you can buy "real" food for more $$, but then you have to actually "think" and figure out what to do with it. The cashier at the store asked me last week what in the world I do with all that bulk and fresh food. Folks have no clue how to cook from scratch anymore! I just don't get it. I make all kinds of "stuff" myself; Sauerkraut, Kefir, Kombucha, freshly milled Sourdough bread, ghee, seedy crunchies for my salads, granola, even bird snacks from my Kombucha fruit second fermentation that taste so good the parrot has to fight for his share! I love cooking and eating healthy. I don't use a lot of recipe books, but I love to read them and get inspired! So Thank you - this was very interesting!
Completely resonate with your point of view, Sabine. It's a sad reality that buying real food is more expensive than subsidized junk. It's going to take a lot of education and increasing awareness - even 'healthy' items tend to be full of additives. I love your passion for making food from scratch - that's an enviable list!
